In the
wake of the terrible attack carried out last weekend at Orlando’s gay club
‘Pulse’, Drachma (Drachma LGBTI and Drachma Parents’ Group) hosted a
vigil to honour the lives of those who were brutally killed that night.
Our candle-lit vigil on Friday 17th June served as a show of strength and
love, in the face of such a horrific act against the LGBTIQ+ community.
However, this attack went even beyond that, so we stood united: #MaltaForOrlando
It may
feel like there is not much we can do to help our brothers and sisters who have
fallen victim to such an act of hate. But showing a strong, united community is
a good place to start.
We gathered near Balluta Parish Church at 7.30 p.m. and with candles in hand,
symbolically ‘walked towards LOVE’.
We thank all civil and religious authorities, NGOs and the general public for joining us in this solidarity walk which came to a close at the LOVE monument, St Julians. U.S. Ambassador G. Kathleen Hill, and the U.K. Deputy High Commissioner Ms. Amy Smith, the Leader of the Opposition Dr Simon Busuttil, the Leader of Alternattiva Demokrattika Prof. Arnold Cassola, the Archbishop's Delegate Mgr. Charles Cordina, the LGBT Consultative Council Chairperson Gaby Calleja, and the Human Rights Director Silvan Agius also attended the vigil.
